Warmwell 2011

Starting out at 1pm from St Austell, I rode out of Cornwall on the lonely ride to Warmwell. The weather forecast predicted fine and dry, and for once got it right. Flat out at 60-ish (no speedo on the P2) I hit the M5 at 2.30pm. The rest of the ride was more interesting, especially after Honiton, with several villages and less dual carriageway. It was getting dark as I arrived at the venue, but I found other club members watching Sid James in Bless this House – great film; not!

The Troglodytes SC contingent was largely made up of the Raikes family, plus one or two others. Neil (Raikes) had sorted the weekend accommodation, but I hadn’t expected the extensive hospitality laid on from the rest of the team. Mandy (Raikes) catered for every meal, ably assisted in the preparation by the rest of the family (Vicky, Gemma and Lisa). After a hearty meal that left everyone feeling soporific, we went to the venue to see the band, have a few jars and see who else we could find. Pip was the DJ in residence and we trooped past, giving him the honourable salute. There followed a dubious exhibition of ‘Strictly Come Soul Dancing’ led by Tom Raikes and fiancée Lisa. Can’t really comment on the Friday night band, as I wanted an early night and headed back to the lodge.

Major breakfast (thanks Mandy), then a breeze round trade stalls before the rideout which took us to picturesque Lulworth Cove where we had ice creams by the seaside. Some of us decided to have an extended ride to Weymouth and as it was a gloriously sunny day, we parked-up on the promenade to watch the world go by.

Saturday night meant Jam DRC – probably the best Jam tribute band I’ve heard. Safe in the knowledge that three Troglodyte members were on security, the evening passed without a hitch.

Another big breakfast on Sunday, prior to loading up and searching for a petrol station that was open. This proved quite an ordeal in the fog, but eventually we made it on to the A35, only to stop to help a fellow Man City fan change a wheel on his PX. Once we’d got it fixed, the rest of his mates turned up, so we set off once more for Cornwall and got back to St Austell by 4.30pm.

Warm weather, warm welcome and a warm atmosphere give a real sense of belonging. A fantastic rally and a great way to end the season.
