Hull via Lincoln
By: Web Editor
Two rallies in one day – First to Lincoln for ‘Scoot to the Waterfront’, then on to the Hull and District Scooter Rally. With an early set-off time of 9am, it was going to be a busy day, taking in a couple of events in Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire. I met Bizz, Lynne and Tony outside Scunthorpe on the B1398 to Kirton in Lindsey along the cliff road to Lincoln. The weather looked a little cloudy, but hopefully the sun would shine on us for the later ride back up the A15 to Hull.
Arriving at Lincoln, I spotted a few friendly faces beside the Brayford Pool, but first on the agenda was a bacon sarnie, purchased from the Sea Cadet HQ who provided refreshments throughout the day. The morning got busier; with more scooter riders arriving from around Lincolnshire and tourists visiting Lincoln, the waterside area became jammed. With the addition of an Italian Market in the city’s high street, the day was proving to be an excellent venue and news of the planned 1.30 rideout was buzzing among the scooter fraternity. Well done to all who helped at this event. Let’s hope it’s on next year, preferably without a rally clash.
We then got ready to head back to Hull to spend the afternoon at the Hull & District Rally. Heading along the busy A15, it was a steady ride until we hit the M180 at Scunthorpe where the three TS1 motors proved their worth and the pace picked up. After around 40 minutes we arrived at the Hull Ionians Rugby Club in Elloughton (the rally venue).
I’ve attended this rally for the past three years and it’s always well organised and attended. The sun was beaming down and it was a bit too warm wearing our riding gear as we looked around the Custom Show. There were a few new rides for 2010 – one that stood out was a stunning Series 1 fitted with an auto engine, but was in keeping with the original classic paintwork and a top class restoration. The campsite was mostly full and the few dealers on site seemed to be busy throughout the day. Soon it was ready to set off home over the Humber Bridge after sharing a drink with yet more friends. The day had been a great success without any breakdowns and the weather had stayed kind.

SCOOT TO THE WATERFRONT – AN ORGANISERS VIEW:
Scooters arrived in advance of the publicised 10am opening time and parked along the waterfront where riders browsed the few stalls that had been able to attend, had a bacon butty and a coffee in the Sea Cadets café, bought raffle tickets, or had a good old natter.
With the stage set for the first band (Blistered), they burst into a rip roaring set of scooterist sounds at around noon and went down well with an appreciative audience. After safety announcements, the Lincoln Knights' fifth charity rideout of over 80 scooters set-off in a two-stroke haze to ‘Woodcocks’ at Burton Waters (just outside Lincoln) but taking in some of the historic city sites on the way.
Returning around 3pm, Custom Show awards were made. Then we had the charity raffle draw (most of the prizes going to Lincoln Knights members as they’d bought the majority of tickets)! The second band of the day (cunningly called ‘3 from 5’ as they were made up of three members of a five-piece band) closed the daytime events.
As the day closed, announcements were made about the free evening ‘Do’ at the Harrows Pub, North Hykeham where ‘Mad Dog Tony’ (the Harrows landlord) span the decks while a musicians’ jam night took place in the lounge, providing a choice of entertainment into the small hours.
All in all a fantastic event considering there were a number of established local rallies on the same day (212 scooters were counted at one point). The day’s profits have been counted and a massive £365 raised for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. Massive thanks to all who helped with the organisation in any way, no matter how small. Also thanks to all who attended the event, making it a huge success.
Bigger and better next year? We’ve been asked... Don’t know yet; maybe just more of the same... (If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it). Turn up and find out!
