To say that Howard Stone’s SX200 is very special to him is an understatement, as it was bought for him by his wife Deborah.

Howard’s SX200

The scooterist scene isn’t a new thing for Howard; in fact he first got hooked into it in the early 1960s and worked hard from the tender age of 12 in order to save up enough money to buy his first scooter in time for his 16th birthday. However his initial joy turned out to be short-lived and the day after he purchased his first scooter – a TV175 – his friend, Mick Cozens, rode it straight into a lamp-post – Howard never even got to ride it! This didn’t deter Howard’s enthusiasm though and in his opinion, the best scooter years for him were to be found in Margate during 1968 and 1969. “Now it’s different,” says Howard “but different in a good way.”

The SX200 you see here was purchased from a guy in Littlehampton and has been restored to perfection in a stunning orange and white paint scheme by Alan, Kim and co at Medway Scooters. The engine has been kept completely standard, the way Howard wanted. Any chroming work that needed doing was carried out by London Chrome with his favourite accessory being an original Ken Cobbing two-prong sprung steel backrest (supplied by editor Mau). There is one accessory that Howard feels is missing however – an original rubber floormat; if you know where Howard can find one, let us know here at CSS.

These days Howard can be found riding the roads of Thanet, Kent with his mates, who joined him for the CSS photo shoot. He is still as enthusiastic as ever about the scooterist scene and has no plans to give up his ‘obsessive’ lifestyle.
