GS screws

What size and type screws are the most correct for attaching the floor mat trim on a Mk1 GS 160?
Stephen (via email)

I use raised head, slotted stainless self tappers. Mine are 12mm long and measured with a vernier, they are 2.8mm across the threads. A bit of advice here… There’s a chance that these will not be of any use. The problem is that when the old (often very rusty) screws, are removed, the holes now remaining might be a little large for this specific screw. The point being that a larger gauge (bigger in diameter) screw might be needed. I say this, as (in the past) the heads of the old screws have sheared on removal and the only way to get the remains out is to punch them through the monocoque. This leaves a rather big hole!

Stainless are not as per factory standard, but they do come out far easier than plated versions. These screws are good for all the target models with a centre mat, not just the early GS 160s.

It’s a good idea to fit the loom and cables before the mat, as the points of these screws can skag these as they are being installed. They can also do the same to your hands and arms!
