Classic vehicle tax petition

A new e-petition has appeared on the government’s website with the aim being to get enough people to sign it in order to make road tax free for all classic vehicles over 25 years old.

Currently free road tax is only available for vehicles that were registered before 1973, but – if successful - this petition would bring back the previous rolling 25 year term, meaning that vehicles registered before 1986 would now benefit from free road tax - therefore reducing the cost of keeping classic cars on the roads.

The petitioners argument is that in doing this, it would not be a huge revenue loss for the DVLA as there are not a vast amount of roadworthy 25 year old plus vehicles currently on the road. Secondly, a lot of these vehicles are mostly second cars, mainly used at weekends and therefore they don't cover huge annual mileages, so why should they pay full tax when they may only be used a few days a year?

Apparently at least 100,000 signatures are needed before the government would consider changing the current setup, so the petitioners have a long way to go yet. If you would like to add your support, then go to: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/2622 and add your support.
