Rally Reviews
Custom show was a scooterist Mecca
21 March 2012
Over a period of many years the Burton Brewers SC Custom Show, Parts Fair and evening do (whew – what a mouthful) has established itself as one of the first and finest events in the scooter year calendar – and this time around was no exception.
Warmwell 2011
18 January 2012.
Starting out at 1pm from St Austell, I rode out of Cornwall on the lonely ride to Warmwell. The weather forecast predicted fine and dry, and for once got it right. Flat out at 60-ish (no speedo on the P2) I hit the M5 at 2.30pm. The rest of the ride was more interesting, especially after Honiton, with several villages and less dual carriageway. It was getting dark as I arrived at the venue, but I found other club members watching Sid James in Bless this House – great film; not!
Cleethorpes national Rally
21 September 2011.
I always enjoy this rally (possibly because my birthday is the same weekend). I rode over to the Haven Inn on the outskirts of Grimsby for the mass ride-in, organised for 11am Saturday each year (it seems to be getting bigger each year with hundreds of scooters gathering in the sun). Travelling as part of a large group of scooters is something else and the looks you get from onlookers is a real buzz – bet they wonder what that crazy bunch is doing?
Camping in Catcliffe 5
20 July 2011.
May 21 saw the most successful Camping in Catcliffe ever. This club-based charity fundraising event has grown year upon year and now attracts 700-plus scooterists from northern England and the Midlands.
VMSC Extravaganza
18 May 2011.
Taking place at the Sports Connexion Centre in Ryton-on-Dunsmore, the Vintage Motor Scooter Club’s annual Extravaganza is an event not to be missed.
Mods v Rockers 2
19 January 2011.
In October 2009 a congregation of 200 Australian motorcycles and scooters rode together from the Brighton to Hawthorn on the inaugural Melbourne Mods v Rockers day charity run.
Prescot Scooter and Motorcycle Show
19 January 2011.
I was contacted by Dave Griffiths from Prescot Museum (part of the Knowsley Arts and Heritage Service) with regards to putting on a classic scooter and bike event.
Sun, Sea and Ska
17 November 2010.
That’s what was promised for the Folkestone Skabour Festival on 3-5 September. Clashing with the established Mersea Island Scooter Rally, this event almost slipped under the radar – which is a pity because it was a well-organised event.
A sunny day in Brighton
17 November 2010.
Living up the coast from Brighton, there are often ventures into Britain’s party capital (now sort of established as the Mod capital). The August Bank Holiday sees The Untouchables (Britain’s premier Mod organisation) running events in Brighton, since taking flight from the IoW Rally a few years back.
Hull via Lincoln
15 September 2010.
Two rallies in one day – First to Lincoln for ‘Scoot to the Waterfront’, then on to the Hull and District Scooter Rally. With an early set-off time of 9am, it was going to be a busy day, taking in a couple of events in Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire. I met Bizz, Lynne and Tony outside Scunthorpe on the B1398 to Kirton in Lindsey along the cliff road to Lincoln. The weather looked a little cloudy, but hopefully the sun would shine on us for the later ride back up the A15 to Hull.
