Highland Scoot 2010
By: Mau Spencer
Over 100 scooters will take to the roads of Central Scotland on 1 May to recreate a 170 mile long endurance trial first carried out over 50 years ago.
The Highland Scoot 2010 is being organised by the Stirling based Gorehounds Scooter Club, and is supported by the Vespa Club of Great Britain.
Organiser Graeme McMaster said: "This is the first time since 1959 that this has been done. The original trial was organised by the Glasgow Vespa Club, and we are recreating this journey after discovering film footage from the original event.
"Several vintage scooters will be taking part, including a 1959 Heinkel Tourist scooter, alongside more modern scooters."
The event will leave from the Wallace Monument in Stirling and passes through some of the country's most beautiful scenery including Loch Lomond and the Rest and be Thankful, before arriving on the shores of Loch Fyne which marks the halfway mark. The return journey retraces the road as far as Tarbert, where the route takes the riders past the north end of Loch Lomond before heading south through Crianlarich and Callander, before arriving back at the day's starting point at the Wallace Monument. Those riders completing the event will be presented with a commemorative medal.
Graeme McMaster said: "The scooter scene in the UK has had a revival in recent years and it is expected that there will be well in excess of 100 scooterists attending this unique event. Scooterists from all parts of the UK and Ireland, and as far afield as Belgium have already confirmed that they will be taking part."
The event will start from the National Wallace Monument in Stirling with the first riders leaving the car park at 9.30am. Original riders from the 1959 event will start the trial, which will be piped off by a pipe band and escorted through the city by motorcyclists from Central Scotland Police.
