First Lambretta around Nurburgring?

Mik Houghton, from Aldridge, Birmingham, recently rode his scooter around the infamous Nurburgring in Germany and as far as we know is the first Lambretta to do so (please contact us if anyone knows of any previous attempts).

Scooterist Scene

His Lambretta, a genuine GP 200 Electronic with a mild tune, had to be equipped with flashing indicators to be allowed to compete. With strict guidelines by track officials, Mik had to guarantee an average speed of 80mph and somehow he managed to bluff them into believing him. Still not sure whether to let him out, the organisers agreed that they would hold all other vehicles back for seven minutes, so he wouldn’t become a mobile chicane.

With its 13.4-mile distance and 147 turns, concentration had to be 100 per cent. Though the traffic was held up, it didn’t take long for cars to catch him, with Porsche GT3s blasting past at 150mph. Even with the distractions, Mik completed his lap in a time of 17 minutes with an average of 53mph. When you think
that it takes a professional driver 50 laps to learn all the corners on the track and the fact the surface is pretty poor in places, he achieved a very respectable time.

To commemorate the feat, Mik was given a graphic to adorn his scooter (something that is only available once a lap has been completed). With good track
knowledge and a fully prepared race scooter, it could be possible to lower the times, but hats off to Mik Houghton the first person to complete a lap of the
Nurburgring on a Lambretta.

11th Box Hill rideout

Few events in the south can have such a reputation for bad luck with weather as the Area 51, Lost Souls Box Hill Rideout on 27 April. There were thunderbolts and lightning, but miraculously no one got particularly wet, even those wearing desert boots.

Scooterist Scene

The scooters gathered at the Newlands Corner car park and wound their way towards Dorking and the Box Hill meeting place with its selection of Sunday car trippers and surprised hairy bikers. The caff did a roaring trade, permitting those scared of a drop of April showers to hide their barnets under cover. A great, friendly meet with many interesting scooters. One example had to be a Yamaha-engined sub Lambretta (not much Lambretta) also featuring a belt-driven Mini rear wheel! For those wanting to boogie, the regular haunt of the Shalford Working Man’s Club was waiting at 2pm with scootering sounds to suit all tastes.

Be careful what you buy

Scooterist Scene

That nice shiny scooter you saw in an internet auction might not be what it seems. That nice spray job could hide a multitude of sins, like a dodgy frame as seen here, turning this Lambretta into a lethal wreck as soon as it got out on the road. Think before you buy!
